Hawaiian Fresh Seafood
Just about this time last year I was cruising around Oahu with a fresh tan and a belly full of poke. One beautiful thing about Hawaii (among many other beautiful things) is the fresh fish and the fact that you never have to search too long for a really good poke bowl.
San Diego is lacking in this regard. Up until recently I could only get my fix at It’s Raw Poke Shop when they came to my neighborhood farmers market, or when I could track down their food truck to Sorrento Valley. Enter my savior, Hawaiian Fresh Seafood.
Hawaiian Fresh Seafood (let’s call it HFS for short) specializes in fresh, sustainable, line-caught fish. Their restaurant is located in an industrial office park off of Mira Mesa Blvd, where they converted the space into a fresh fish market and poke shop, with the refrigerated displays reminiscent of a Foodland grocery store. Once inside you can buy poke bowls served with rice or simply order poke or fish by the pound.
Since I was taking my fish straight home anyways (HFS is takeout only because of the current state of the world) I bought a half pound of a few different poke types and cooked my own rice at home.
Hubs and I shared the Garlic Salmon, Furikake Salmon, and Shoyu Ahi. Holy fucking shit! The Garlic Salmon blew my mind hole. I’m partial to salmon poke anyway because of the fatty, buttery texture, but this garlic marinade was perfect. It was extremely flavorful, but in a complimentary way that didn’t cover up the fresh salmon. My mouth is watering at the memory.
HFS has a huge variety of other options to choose from, and they post their daily offerings on their Instagram stories (@TheMarketHFS ). They are limited to daytime hours (10 am – 4 pm) and are open Monday – Saturday. I’m happy to welcome them to the hood and excited to return and try something new.
